Kate McMillan Exhibition at Performance Space

Leading Australian arts organisation Performance Space have commissioned Kate McMillan to produce a new 5 channel video installation for their BURUWAN (ISLAND) season of works, which opens this month.

BURUWAN (ISLAND) is a season of works by Australian artists that highlights the politics of our distinctive landscape through live performance, sculpture, and video installation.

Visual artist Kate McMillan and composer Cat Hope join forces for The Moment of Disappearance, an installation that unveils the intertwining histories of imprisonment and banishment linked to island locations around Australia (Port Arthur, Wadjemup/Rottnest Island) and the Greek island of Pontikonisi through an atmospheric, immersive landscape of sound, sculpture and video. The exhibition traces legacies of the Enlightenment to their colonial manifestation in Australia through a narrative where a protagonist’s retreat to an island is followed by a rapid decent into madness, as memories of the past collapse into the present.

Kate McMillan is currently represented by Venn Gallery and has exhibited extensively in Australia as well as overseas since 1997. Her work is held in numerous private and public collections, including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, City of Perth, KPMG, Kerry Stokes Collection, Wesfarmers and the University of Western Australia Collection. Her work incorporates a range of media including installation, sculpture, film, sound, photography and painting. McMillan is interested in the linking narratives of forgetting and place, often focusing on the histories of various island sites.

Photographic stills from The Moment of Disappearance series are now currently on display in Venn Gallery’s Summer Show 2014.
